Afonsinho é considerado por muitos como um verdadeiro pioneiro na conquista dos direitos dos atletas no Brasil. Em 1971, em plena ditadura militar, ele começou uma grande batalha jurídica contra o seu clube Botafogo, que criticou o seu compromisso político e seu olhar “subversivo”. Ele então recebeu o passe livre que lhe permitiu mudar de emprego. Ao cumprir com êxito os seus direitos, Afonsinho torna-se o primeiro futebolista emancipado Brasil.
Former glory of Brazilian football, it is considered by many as a true pioneer in the conquest of the rights of athletes of his country. In 1971, in full military dictatorship Afonsinho began a major legal battle against Botafogo who criticized his political commitment and his “subversive” look, and gets a miss which allows it to change employers. By successfully enforce its rights, Afonsinho becomes the first footballer emancipated Brazil.
